Ok,
So I live in Northern Virginia. Bought a set of matching 1980 KZ 440 LTD's. One has a starter problem. So my question is two fold, sorry I can't be more descriptive but the guy hasn't dropped the bike's off at my house yet...(I'm so excited):

1) What should I be looking for here? Could it be the starter just needs cleaning? Are there any common cures for the starter on a kz 440?

2) How hard is it to rebuild a starter? Is it something someone with a decent amount of car/truck repair knowledge should be able to do?

Thanks for your time...

You could rebuild it or just buy one. Start with the basics. Check the wiring first.

Another secondary question...Is there anywhere to get a new or rebuilt starter online? Or if anyone knows a shop in northern virginia that would carry one.

Or how much is it going to cost me to get the starter rebuilt?

currently workin on a friends 82 kz 440...pull the starter out...take the armature out and sand it down...take a slottede screw driver and clean the groves out of the armature as well...spray down good with brake cleaner...check brushes and reassemble...should help...

you can buy rebuild kits (brushes and contacts). I would check your local bike slavage yard first for a used starter. it will proably save your some time.
