Speedometer, electric? was created by Drake
The speedometer for my KZ550 stopped working a short time ago, and honestly it didn't really bother me at the time since I wasn't riding too much (weather has been terrible, been worried about moving, etc).

But now that I might be moving in a few months, I've been fixing up as much of my bike as I can and I was pondering the Speedometer issue. I noticed that it's dark and doesn't light up despite the fact thet tach does.

Does the KZ550 speedometer need power to work right? Or is this just a dead lightbulb and I've still got an issue else where with the speedometer? I've got a Clymer manual, but couldn't really tell from looking at it.

Im not sure what how a 550 works, but my the speedo on my 1000 is ran by a cable that runs down to a gear attached to the front wheel. Their are two bulbs that run into the back of the speedo to illuminate it at night. The fact that your speedo is dark probably has nothing to do with it not working, just burnt bulbs.
