And remember, I'm still really a newbie in a lot of ways - never really turned a wrench until I got my 400 3 years ago, so I'm still not that good at spotting the obvious sometimes.
...but what truly made the light go off (pun intended) in my head was: When I was setting the timing for the millionth time with the timing light, I suddenly realized that the light wasn't blinking perfectly steady. It seemed to miss one or two every once in a while, then it would miss every other one for a series of maybe ten or so. I tried the timing sensor on both plug wires and the result was the same (again, only when the coil warmed up a bit). Mind you, since the ignition was Newtronic, and the wires had been replaced, it really couldn't be anything else. I was so pissed at myself for never really *seeing* that before, even though I've probably seen it a hundred times.
Again, thanks to all you guys for all the advice and time spent on this problem.
EDIT: I think I'll rename this thread so it better reflects the outcome...
