Ever seen this kit? Would it work?

I'm thinking about goofing around with my own ignition system to replace the points system on my KZ400. I bet a photoelectronic trigger with one of these would neat. I already know about the Newtronics kit, I'm still half thinking of getting one of those too.

Interesting, but pretty easy to make something like that out of an HEI module for $20.

400 twin is single-coil. (His avatar photo is a twin.)

400/four is dual-coil.

Yeah, yeah I know I figured that part out. I'm not sure what the benefit of putting something between the points and the coil would be anyway. Besides being able to set the dwell by turning a pot. And having something else that could potentially fail.

If it's built correctly, the potential for failure should be pretty low. It should be at least as reliable as a Dyna ignition.

The benefits are that the life of a new set of points may very well outlast the life of the bike. That is if the points cam is nice and smooth and lubed about once a year (and the felt is in tact) and the points mechanism is working right.

It saves the points by eliminating all of the arcing and eliminating most of the current through the points. At most, you may have to run a piece of cloth between the points every year or so.

If you don't ride much to begin with, your points may last several years in which case there may be little benefit to this mod.
