coil mod question

OK I'm doing the mod for the coils. The directions say cut the wire from the kill switch. I have a red and yellow and a brown coming from the switch. Wich one do I cut?

Dunno about 78.....but my 77 I tapped into the red wire as per wiring diagram.

Is that the red and yellow? I have a red and yellow going to the starter button and the kill switch. I also have a brown wire at the kill switch and a black around the starter button. BTW Auto Zone has kits that have the relay and wiring all in one pack. You just need to have a few extra do dads to complete it. So if anyone is not doing the mod because you can't find the stuff real easy, there you go.

If you don't have a "red" only wire just use a test lite to find the one that is hot in the on position.
Someone should have a wiring diagram and will chime in here on this post. Roy

Damn I left my book in Idaho! I hate leaving things taken apart overnight. If I was to guess I would cut the red/yellow wire. But there are two of them and I know I would pick the wrong one. Thats the way my life goes! :woohoo:

Run back to AutoZone and grab a cheapo test lite (if ya dont have one).....do as roy-b-boy-b said.....find whats hot ONLY when kill switch is on. THATS the bugger ya want........
(Hint....dont pull an indykaw77 and try to see whats hot without key turned on. DOH!:blink: )

solid brown is power to headlight switch and stop switch red/yellow is power wire to coils black wire goes to starter solenoid.hope that helps!:whistle: goodluck,happy wrenching!

OK so I need to hook the relay to the brown wire? I hooked it to the yellow/red wire and the bike runs but that doesn't make sense cuz that would be the same route as the stock set up. I hate wiring!!!

No, it's my understanding you will want the red/yellow wire, not brown. I was thinking that "doesn't make sense cuz that would be the same route as the stock set up" as well, but the relay is getting power directly from the starter relay bolt to terminal 36 on the relay. The red/yellow will just be the trigger turning on the relay.

Well that was too easy! I had to have done something wrong. It runs so maybe I got it right the first time! :ohmy:

Mines running TOO! It did seem to easy to me as well. I have the red/yellow wire coming to the coils, splitting for each one. Disconnect these, run to the relay and then from the relay to the coils again. Some of the instructions made me think I'd need to find another wire.

easy, easy, easy mod. very worthwhile.

i made sort of a harness for my setup, so that i can un plug everything and take it out if i want/need to.

i used those anderson power pole connectors, and soldered everything.

relay everything, my lights are next. i love the older bikes with the light switch, makes this super easy.
