This is on ebay, and if I didn't just get the parts for my swap I would be all over it.

Only problem is Kawasaki did not use electronic ignition on any 1979-80 KZ650, so these were not original Kawasaki KZ650 pieces. What they are is hard to say. For sure it's a factory KZ electronic ignition and could be adapted to the KZ650.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

I've been thiking about switching my bike over to electronic but do not have the bucks for a new dyna, if it's not for a 650 is it difficult to adapt it? and a silly question here also, I took off highway pegs off my bike and the horn was mounted to it and now I can't figure out where the horn would normally be mounted.

You need everything he has in the auction, and just replace the point setup with that.

Ask the seller some questions about the bike, maybe he knows what model they came from, or maybe he bought the bike setup that way and he rode on that setup for months/years, whatever. I would take a chance on it personally.

I just bought a system on ebay from a 550, and an igniter from a 750. I know the 550 ignition can be installed on the 650 motor, and in some previous thread somebody said most 4 cyl Kawasaki igniters would work. When I checked the 750 model igniter, I saw it was used on the 650.

Go for it, what's a Dyna sell for now, $120? I got all my stuff for $70.

I'd go for it too, but have just put a KZ1000 electronic Ign. and Igniter on. Have yet to test fire it though.

Scotty355, the horn on the C model goes front and center on the frame, under the steering stem. I think the SR's goes there as well.

Here's a pic of Blake's 650. You can see the horn up front below the steering stem.

It looks like the standard Kaw ignition from about 1981 to 1983. Whether it's for a 550 or 650 it should work for both (750/fours also).

The differences for the different models will be minor. The advance angle may be different, the advancer springs may have different tension, and the lengths of the wires may be different. Usually the part number on the ignitor is different than what Kaw has on their parts fiche.

Also, the mounting holes on the timing plate may have to be elongated to set the timing right. (This can also be fixed by re-orienting the rotor's iron slug.)

so the long and short is that it would work? Would one also need to get new or different coils for that setup?

I've been told my stock coils should work with the KZ1000 Ign, so they should work with this one, right fellas?

rst thx for the reply on the horn location but I looked at the frame cross there and there is no hole for the horn i might drill and tap there, but just out of curiosity did any sr's come with highway pegs?

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: yes, but the dwell is slightly less on the electronic ignition, so you get slightly less spark energy at higher RPMs. If your carbs are out of whack, it may make a difference. If your mixture is good, you should notice no difference. That said, I wouldn't ride around on 30 year old coils. I've been stranded from old coils. They worked fine until one rainy afternoon, after riding in the rain, both coils went belly up within a few miles of each other. Tiny cracks don't become a problem until water gets in.

I had my bike die on a rainy day. I had a short LTD fender on up front, and water was getting sprayed up under my gas tank. I had a small towel with me, luckily. Once dried, she fired back up. I have since sprayed my coils and the general area with an electrical sealer, and rmoved the short fender and put back on the longer stock one.
