650 plug wire diameter?

Now that I've got your attention, a quick question.:laugh: The permanently attached plug wires on a 650 Kaws coil is 7mm correct?

Indeed, 7mm copper core.

You hit one of Stein's pet peeves with that one, so I had to fix it

If you need to replace them or splice them...NAPA sells a 4 wire kit for 4 cyl tractors that works great. 7mm metal core.

NAPA part number is #700172. You will also want to buy (4) NGK splicers #8083 available at Z1enterprises. Call them and talk to Jeff Saunders. The splicers cost about $7 or 8 each but work real well. They allow you to change wires over and over without shortening the original wires after the first splice.

The NAPA web site is down. How much does the tractor plug wire kit cost? Does it have copper wires? Is it resistor or non-resistor and does it give you the clips and caps to go into the coils and over the spark plugs?

I don't recall the cost...maybe $20.00??This is their Belden Max Premium wire set. It comes with standard automotive ends attached at one end...the other end is stripped but clips are provided for you to add. It is metal core but I can't tell what kind of metal. It would best be used with point type ignition but can be used with electronic ignition if you substitute the automotive ends for NGK type resistor caps. The core on these has more strands than the original wires from what I can tell. The core seems pretty stiff as well. Seems to be pretty durable stuff and appears to be coated.Hope this helps.

Handy info thanks. I already have a couple of places lined up for the splice connectors, called "cable connectors" at Sargents Auto Electric, for $6 each. Many auto or snowmobile places stock them....I had to go and ruin one good coil out of curiosity, (I didn't have a bad one to take apart). The 550 coils wires unscrew to be taken off, revealing a little metal spike contact in the coil body for the wire. I wanted to see what was up with the attached 650 wires, so I nipped one off a few inches from the coil body then took the nippers and slowly pried the plug rubber wire coating back. It came out of the coil alright, but I killed it. The rubber coating holding the internal wires goes deep into the coil body. All I was left with was the small strand of wires left hanging from deep back inside the hole. Glad that I didn't do this to my really good set. I'm willing to wreck a cheap part for a clearer understanding of its function/construction.
