I drilled even though it removed very little material. I'm worried that I didn't get all the shavings out, so I'm going to remove that carb and go through it. I'm not sure how to avoid the shvings problem, but I will be sure to be more careful the next time.

The shavings "problem" isn't all that difficult to fix. Put the air screw back in (with the spring) and blow air from a compressor or get a can of compressed air from the computer section at Walmart and blow in the small hole on the venturi edge on the same size as the pilot jet. Of course, the pilot jet shouldn't be reinstalled at this point. This will blow any shavings/dust out the pilot well hole. Wear eye protection.
