Dumb Newb Tank question... was created by sasquatch
My tank seems a bit loose...how is it SUPPOSED to be anchored to the frame...there doesn't seem to be anything at the back of the tank holding it on at all...

Thanks.

There should be a single hex/phillips bolt fastening your tank to the frame

Note in my picture just above the tin foil tape stuff, thats where it screws in.

ummmm....mine doesn't look like that, no hex bolt...

check it out, it just has a little insert like a key handing down and it is just sitting in there...am I missing something? You can totally just lift up the back of the tank.

Oh thats right, you have the different gas tank to me. Just how lose is it? If you padded the hole that it slots into a little think that would do the trick? Your seat cover will stop the tank from just randomly flying up at least.

See my tank actually shows the bolt, the diagram for yours doesnt so I assume what you have right now is how it is supposed to be

Not sure which year bike you're working on but many KZ's had the back end of the tank secured by a rubber band. That's how my KZ900's setup. You probably ought to go to www.buykawasaki.com and check out the parts diagrams for your model and year.

Sasquatch:

There are three fundamental ways Kawasaki attached the rear of its older style tanks to the frame:
1.with a bolt
2.with a stretchy band over a peg (rubberband)
3.with a peg dropped into a rubber grommet

The original idea was to have breakaway tanks that in case of an accident the tank would seperate and get away from the rider. Most of these setups had a great deal of interference from the seat so the tank did not shake to much. Then they started bolting down the tank the theory of the seperating tank went away. Just make sure your tank is isolated from making hard contact with metal or it could wear through. It should be rubber mounted.

That is exactly what I have (3)...it's a peg (I described it as a key) that inserts into a hole in the frame and has a rubber bumper pad....it might just be loose looking I pretty much don't have a seat

Thanks guys!

The front curve of the seat kinda latches mine down. I can open the seat and lift the tank off.

I have a '78 KZ-650 and the tab or key on the tack seats into a rubber gromit with a slot in it, like the photo above (one of the previous answers).
