where is the gas going? was created by Rev
I put the original vm24 carbs back on the bike jetted with pods, and when I shut the bike off at night and come back in the morning, the float bowls are empty. I checked the floats and they are set right. There is no sign of any leaking from the overflow. My compression is 155, 160, 170, 160, and my valves are just set to proper clearance. I also have the bike on the center stand, so the bike is level to. Any ideas where the gas may be going?  :S :S

Your gas is going one of two places. Either it's evaporating out of the float bowls or it's going into your crankcase. I bet it's your crankcase. Does your oil smell like gas?

You may have some thing. The oil does have a slight gas smell, but how can it get into the crankcase, when the floats are set properly?

Floats may be set correctly but that does not mean that a float valve is not leaking.

Even if the floats are set properly they can still leak. When I rebuild carburetors I alway wet set my floats. That way I know the needle is sealing and won't leak.

Well I checked the floats using the wet method, and all were in speck. with a 4oz syringe I put gas into the carbs.

I then left it to sit for awhile (30min)and it was down to the second line 60 min later it is down to the bottom line, and now holds there.thats a little less then 1.25 oz

There is no leakage from the overflow ports, or out of either side of the carbs, which eliminates the gas going into the oil.
will gas evaportate out of the float bowl vents that fast?
