I just took a quick look at ebay and found a used 40mm Mikuni smooth bore that came of a HD. If it will run a 80 cu. in. V-twin, i don't see why it wouldn't breath enough for a 903cc engine. 903cc converts to 55 cu. in., even with the added revs....it should be enough carb right?

Which would be a better buy, the Mikuni 40mm smoothbore...or a Keihin 40mm CV carb? Which one would have better parts availability and offer the most potential performance and hassle free adjustment?

While I'm sure it's possible, I'll bet it's more expensive than sticking with stock, even if you have to look to E-Bay to find the real stuff.

Its looking like i can get a used carb for around $200 or less, im sure the price would be way high if you had to pay someone to make a 1 into 4 intake. Seeing how i can do that myself, it looks as if i could possibly do this for around the same amount it would cost me to have someone get my stock carbs really dialed in.

I looked at some dyno graphs from another site using a 40mm CV carb on a V-Twin and it looks quite capable of handling 60-70 rear wheel hp on a 80 cube evo. I'd like to hear some feedback from people that have alot of experience with motorcycle carbs just to see what they think. I've got alot of experience with auto carbs, and seeing how a motor is pretty much a motor. It looks like a 40 mm carb should handle a 903 without a hitch. But then again, im new to motorcycle mechanics so i could be wrong...thus why im wanting a professional opinion before i commit. Thanks.

Now that is the type of stuff I love to see! Americans have lost most of their home-engineering skills, good to see they're not all lost!

I usually only see this type of stuff in developing countries, where it is done out of necessity. Nice job Milkman!
