Removing Carbs

I just recently purchased a KZ750 that had been sitting for four years, so i know the Carbs must be cleaned. Can anyone give me any advice on how remove the carbs and would is best to use to clean them. I'm a Newb if you haven't figured that out. Haha. Thanks for any help that anyone could give me. I'm really glad i was sent to this site.

First thing you need to do is buy a manual, and there is usually at least on on eBay.

Don't mess with the carbs until you do a complete tune up and get it running, then run a few tanks of gas treated with carb/fuel injector cleaner through it and see how it runs at that point.

Eddie, Please list your bike year/model and possibly your location in your signature. There are 750 twins and 750 fours and variations in the carbs on all of them. If you do buy a manual, as suggested, note that they go through tuning and maintenance steps in a certain order. The carb part is generally last. There is a good reason for this as carb tuning is a waste of time if the bike is otherwise out of tune.

I did find a manual on Ebay, thanks for the tip. I have a question. Will she still start even if the Carbs are dirty?

Now that's cutting straight to the heart of the matter

My 79 750 twin set for six years and started with six year old gas in the tank, the 80 750 twin I have no idea how many years it had been since it last ran, but it started and ran on one cylinder

I did this. I put new oil and new gas in it. And the key ignition does nothing. I use the kick starter but I get just sputters. Is there any advice that i could be missiing that would get her at least started up or even act like it's going to start up. Also what does it mean when the key ignition does nothing when i turn the key? I feel that i may be getting close, and with all the help i'm getting here i'm sure i'll get her started up soon.

I would suggest the following;

Install a fully charged battery
Check points/ignition system
Check voltage to coils and test
Remove, clean or replace spark plugs
Check plug wires
Drain carburators and check for free flow of gas
Check compression and/or do a leak down test.

The only thing that should happen when you turn the key on is the oil light and neutral light should come on.

Pull choke lever up to turn choke on, push down to turn off.

Starter button is on right switch pod next to throttle, clutch handle must be pulled in before starter will work.

Turn key on then turn on lights and see if they work, if the headlight is not shining pretty bright then you need a new battery. Actually, you need a new battery anyway if it's more than a year old

Do "Not" open the throttle when trying to start it with the choke on.

This info is just in case you don't already know it

Only turn the key to the middle position.

What happens if you open the throttle when trying to start a bike with the choke on? I did that a couple of times when I was trying to start my bike one morning. Dont touch the throttle? just keep hitting the starter button?

Choking with the throtle closed increases the raw gas flow to the engine.
With the throtle open the air flow is increased thereby leaning out the mixture. This is counter productive to choking.
