GPz750 Needs non-CV carbs was created by ajsfirehawk
I’m working on a 1985 GPz750 custom build. I bought it not running with a damaged tank. I built it for the owner with the understanding the Mikuni BS34 CV carbs aren’t likely to work well with the pod filters on it. Pod filters were an absolute must for him. He (and I) are finally fed up with trying to make them run properly.  There isn’t an opportunity to go back to the stock airbox as much of the space the airbox occupied is now filled with electronics.  He wanted the ‘waist’ of the bike as slim as possible which necessitated the relocation of those items.·      The bike starts hard and if there is even a small amount of contamination on the pilot jets, it will not start at all. Remove, clean the pilots, bike starts again.·      There is also a dead spot in the throttle between about 4K and 6K.·      Prior to tearing into the custom build, I went through the bike and got it running properly.
  • Complete carb cleaning in an ultrasonic cleaner, adjusted the valves, balanced the carbs. I replaced the coils, plug wires = great spark.
  • He is now convinced the right thing to do is to put some non-CV carbs on the bike to improve performance and useability.
The Question: What carbs would you recommend for a stock GPz 750 with the two into one breadbox air filter pods?
Stock 85 GPz on the right is what we started with. The bike on the left is the build.

Have you tried a Dynojet kit?  They are the short-cut method to getting a set of CV carbs to play happy with pods.

As for different carbs, VM 26's or maybe RS34's are worth a consideration.

Thanks Nessism. I left out a key piece of my puzzle. Our base elevation is 5K feet and the foot of the CO Rockies. In an hour's ride we can be at over 10K feet. With a non-CV carb are we going to have such a rich mixture the bike won't run well if I went to an RS34 style carb?

PS - No, I didn't try a Dynojet kit. That really does help CVs behave better with pods eh? News to me, Thanks
