Working in the carbs and choke butterfly valves don’t spring closed like they should. I’m not sure if the old spring is tired, or if I have it installed correctly. I tried every which way and it seems to only go on one way (pic from FSM isn’t too helpful). I also tried to wrap the spring another time (can’t) and lubricated the butterfly shaft. It still doesn’t spring closed consistently. I did ungang the carbs, so I was very careful when reassembling them as a unit to tighten slowly as not to pinch the shaft. That helped, but they still don’t work as they should. Any suggestions? Anyone have a better pic of the spring placement?

I have dealt with this exact issue before, if you have unbolted the carbs, like unganged them, then you have to be sure they are aligned when you reassemble them. Otherwise the choke flap rod will bind and they will not work properly. Once I figured this out, it was began to work properly without replacing this spring. 

it can’t hurt to pull the rod out, sand down any high spots where they go through the carb bodies with 500+ grit sandpaper and then reassemble with a light coat of grease or oil applied to the seals/rod.

What I found critical is to loosen the choke butterfly screws slightly, then carefully align the butterflys in the carb body, until the shaft rotates smoothly.  Then tighten the screws.  Use red loctite on the screws too.  It may also help to loosen the screws holding the carbs on the main gang bars and allow the carbs to self align that way. 

NO GREASE on the shaft, because that creates too much drag.  Some dry lube, the Dupont Teflon stuff, works good though, because it's very thin.

Just following up, all the suggestions worked great. I actually made a jig to spin the shafts in a drill with the other end supported by a wood block and wet polished from 800 grit to 3000 grit. Carb bank reassembled by tightening bolts from inside of rail to the outside while checking choke function after each screw was tightened. Now choke works splendidly. More issues to deal with, but that is for another post.
