I am looking to buy a Dynojet stage3 kit for my 1977 KZ650 and the retailer said they have one for the 1978 KZ650 but can't guarantee it will fit the 77. Were there any differences in the 2 years? I thought they both had the same carbs. Thanks for your assistance.

There are some differences depending on which models you are talking about.  Some have a pilot screw (sometimes called a fuel screw) and some have an air screw and some have both. Then there are the 78 models B2a and D1a that came stock with vm22ss carbs, which the other models came with vm24ss carbs. There are differences in things like the slide cutaway, size of main jet, needle jet and jet needle.  There should be an ID stamped just below the chock lever see attached pic.  I have also attached some tables with info I could find and make sense of which carb came on which model.

Ok, thanks! It shouldn't make any differences as the kit is jets and needle valves by the looks of things.

You'll get a few extra ponies from vm24's over 22's. Easy way to differentiate between the two is vm22's have an extra port at the 10 o'clock position in the inlet mouth.
