I am wondering if I need two jets in this hole? I can’t see it in any diagram that I look at. There were two when I took carbs out to rebuild. 77 Kz650 b

Probably had a #15 pilot jet capped with a #50 cover jet. Seen it on a few sets of 650 carbs but never really heard a convincing theory as why it was done. Some says it was to do with emissions regs in some US states but don't see what the second bigger jet would do to reduce emissions? Anyone?

Anyway, the #50 cap jet can be omitted without any downside and will run perfectly fine.

Stock carbs on the 650s that have only a pilot screw (no air screw or not both) have this second #50 pilot jet.  This is true of both vm24ss and vm22ss carbs.  I have removed this second jet when cleaning, rebuilding, tuning carbs without any notice in operations.

I am unsure of what the purpose of this second jet was.  I can see how it could work as a limiter of the amount of fuel pulled/pushed up into the pilot jet, and also increase the speed of the fuel.  But do not know why it was needed.
