Hey guys! I love these old motorcycles to death! The problem is I bought the bike from my father in law - they have very low elevation (300) compared to mine (3500). I can’t get a tank of gas to last me 60 miles. there are no leaks. Could it be because the carbs need to be adjusted or could there be a bigger problem. If it is carbs, could I have some directions on how to adjust them. Thanks guys!!

How does it run? That's a severe change in elevation so if it feels sluggish and the plugs are black I would check the jetting and compare it to stock. Plan on doing a complete teardown of the carbs (lot's of tutorials on this site) if you haven't already.
Oh, and let's see some pics!

It runs pretty good - when I put the throttle down it lags for a second and finally goes. When I’m at a stop light I can smell light gas when Im at a stop light sometimes - Im at 60 miles now and it is below 1/4 of a tank. I know my father in law rebuilt the carbs and rejetted them - I’ll look at the spark plugs when I get home.

..I could say run it until you need to switch to reserve, see how far you go.....but to play it safe;............ what if .....when you have 1/4 tank indicated, disconnect line from petcock to carbs (in ON position. am assuming is vacuum operated).   Connect a clear plastic tube from petcock to a 5 gallon container.    Set the petcock to prime, and let if flow until is completely empty and see how much gasoline you get on container.

........use a clean (or new) container.   You would return the gas to bike tank, so no one gets hurts, and you don't have anything to loose, other than a bit of work.
