Fuel injection Trouble shooting assistance was created by diego092409
I have gotten my project bike back together and am shaking out the modifications that I made.  When I first started it up, the engine raced and smoked and acted like it was flooded and wouldn't start again for a while.  I found the tank's check valve was stuck closed which I thought created back pressure and a high pressure situation.  I put it back together and it ran poorly and the fuel pressure was still too high so, I replaced the fuel regulator and set it at 33 psi per the manual.  The regulator has a pressure gauge on it.  I got it started and it ran better but still smoked and stumbled and had no power.

This bike didn't run for 6 years and before that hadn't really run for 10 years before that.  When I had it running 6 years ago, it ran really well, it was put out of commission because of a burned up fuse box and my over exuberance to do a resto mod based on the projects I saw on this website.

Am I looking at a fuel injector stuck open? I turned down the pressure on the regulator to 20 PSI and smoked less but it has no power?  If the fuel injector is sticky, will it get better as I run the bike in and get everything lubricated or do I need to pull the injectors and clean them? How do I test for if one is sticking?

My project bike is an 82 GPZ1100 with DFI

Have you try to adjust the TPS (throttle position sensor) to max. engine rev @ idle position?

If I am not mistaken there are some docs here on this site related to EFI.

Look under the file base and search for efi  for several docs on this system

I have not tinkered with the TPS yet. Everything in my google searches point to a stuck open fuel injector. I put a bottle of seafoam in the gas tank. What are the odds that an injector stuck open will come free eventually or will I burn up the stuck open injectors?

If the injector is stuck open, it's dumping gas into the crankcase, so it's best to remove and clean the injectors now.

The fuel pressure must be set at 33PSI.  This is not a closed-loop system.

How old is the battery and what's the battery voltage when it's running?

Battery is a new Lithium Ion 12 v battery.  The rear shock mount is taking up the area where the battery used to sit so, I needed to relocated it.

I was just hoping to keep from having to pull the injectors but it appears that it is probably in my best interest to pull them all and clean them since the old gas appears to have gummed up the works.

Thanks for the advice.

I don't know anything about FI. my disclaimer, hee.   Not that he's an expert or anything (he very well may be),
but Mfolks has posted a number of replies on another forum. maybe here on KZR as well:
google search = site:kawasakimotorcycle.org Mfolks fuel injection

ps:  when googling, you could change the site search to KZR and also change fuel injection to a more specific term or topic.

Sorry, all have been meaning to update on this topic.  Home projects got me derailed.  Was tired of hearing the wife ask when I was going to finish the basement when I was working on my bikes...

So, I cleaned and coated the inside of the tank. Cleaned the Pressure relief valve, put a new regulator on it and have come to the conclusion that I have 2 injectors stuck open based upon the smell, clouds of smoke and the fact that exhaust headers on cylinders 3 and 4 are cold when measured with an infrared thermometer.  Good thing is the crankcase has been cleaned out and flushed well and good after sitting for all these years bad thing, I have to pull those injectors and get them working properly.

Any tips on pulling and cleaning these injectors?  I have seen videos where you just keep douching them with cleaner until the varnish washes away and the solenoid closes.

First, make sure there's a fuel injector signal, going to the suspect injectors, by using a Noid light (a quick Google search will explain how they work).
If the Noid light isn't blinking on/off, the computer may be bad, or there may be wiring issues.

If you want to replace the injectors with new ones, the correct ones are for a Nissan 280ZX (non-turbo).  I bought mine at a local Advance Auto, for
under $200 (for all four injectors), last year.  They came with the correct seals.  You will probably have to cut the rubber hose to fit them.

If you don't buy new ones, definitely replace the injector seals.

The best way to clean them is to send them out to a company which specializes in injector cleaning/rebuilding.  They should come back flow-balanced.
But the cost of new fuel injectors is reasonable, and a better option, IMO.  I also put a new fuel pump on my '82 GPZ1100.  Carter P74015.

The injectors aren't that tough to remove.  Download a service manual for details.  I believe one is available on this site.

This is what I was going to suggest.  RC Engineering offers a fuel injection testing and cleaning service.

I've been guilty of using a Harbor Freight ultrasonic tank and  a stereo amplifier to clean mine.
Other times I used WitchHunter Performance.
