how long should you choke a kz650? i was told till it warms up or it will fowl a plug. there are times when it is still pretty cold so i ride with the choke till i get to the highway and then at speed i can run it at normal.

now i understand it depends on what the out side temp is. do you run a choke till the engine is warm? and then drive?

I choke on the cool mornings, keep it under 2500, for a few minutes or until it idles by itself. I have to keep fiddling with it to keep it from racing up to 3500-4000rpm. Then I ride easy for a couple miles until I get to the highway.

I use the choke until she can idle on her own. That usually is only for a few minutes. I will shut the choke off and rev the engine a little and she usually is ready to go. If not, the choke comes on again. By the time I'm all zipped up and my helmet is on, she idles on her own. I cannot remember the last time I rode with the choke on.

Mind you, I don't get to ride to work (have a work vehicle) and don't usually ride if the weather is too cold.

I only choke my 650 for like maybe 30 seconds tops. If I choke it any longer, it starts to rich misfire and stumble (this is full choke). After about a minute it won't even take partial choke. If I choke to long, I have to clear it with some throttle.
I just full choke mine till it starts, then hold full choke till the revs rise to about 2500 rpm (on choke only, no throttle) and I get no missing on any cylinders. Then it is ready to idle.

I can actually hear when my bike is ready to go. I start on full choke, leave it for 15-20 seconds then move to half choke. It will idle there for a bit while I put my gear on, then I can hear it move up a hundred rpm or so, a slight shift. When it does this the bike is running smoothly and humming away. I give it a quick rev, then off I go. It only takes a few minutes for the whole procedure. I never rev the snot out of it when the bike is cold, I take it easy for a bit so that it is warmed up.
