I just replaced the push pull cables on my 79 kz1000, however they seem to be adjusted properly but uf you open the trottle say 1/4 way it doesn't idle down right away. If you throttle wide open (bike off) the throttle snaps back..a weak return spring ??

might be a weak spring because new cables shouldnt be "sticky", but I would double check to see if there are any kinks or sharp bends in the cables, and even spray some lube down them just to rule them out as the problem.

Thanks I did sray some Deep Creep down the cables and there is no kinks ?? perhaps the cables aren't adjuted correctly.

i was having the same problem and i'll just tell u what others told me..........

it might be an air leak around the carb boots thats what it seemed to be on my bike.

It might be a lot of things but since you put cables on and don't know how to adjust them, I suspect the cables right away. BTW: you don't lube cables with Deep Creep. Buy some cable lube... Do you have a manual which shows how to adjust cables or do you need this info?

I have a clymer manual and i did follow the instructions however they are not the greatest. Wired George could you read my post in the carb section and give me a thought on that problem.

My throttle snaps back at wide open and 1/2 but at 1/4 and below it seems to go back in slo motion STILL!!

Loosen the adjusters at the handle bar just till you feel some slack. Does the return spring have enough force to close the throttle now? If it does you had em too tight. If not look for other problems like kinks or routing complications down by the carbs.

Are you sure you have the correct cables ? As mentioned I would look for proper routing and no binding. Id adjusted properly they should snap back fine. If you have an slow idle return.......check for other things like a vacuum leak at the carb holders. Did this problem exist brfore the cables were replaced ?

Fonzee has a good point. I have a couple dozen throttle cables in my shop. On a VM set of carbs; say a 76 VM26, about 10 of the cables will fit BUT... you just can't get enough adjustment on some of them. In other words, the amount of cable coming out the end that connects the cable to the carb assembly is different with the length of exposed cable too short for proper adjustment. I have some that have 5" exposed cable and some with only 3". While you can fit the 3", you can't get the butterfly shut EVEN with the cable adjusted for max length of the exposed part.

Thanks to all, but I am going to take it to my local bike shop...not something I want to fool around with !!

I ordered the cables from the local kawi dealer and when I got the bike it had only a pull cable and it was even worse then.

Disconnect the return cable, and see if the throttle snaps back then... if it is still slow, disconnect the pull cable and see if the quadant on the carbs snaps back properly without any cables attached at all. I never replaced any return cables on any bike I had with one, they are a pain in the ass, and the the pull cable alone works just fine...
