sbjones, You didn't mention what your goals were for this bike you are building. Economy? Performance? Mixture of the two?

As far as where to get rings, have you contacted www.z1enterprises.com to see if Jeff can get them? I buy ALL my engine rebuild parts from Jeff as he generally will have things no one else will. They may NOT be listed on his web site...

That is exactly what I have. Im not out looking for hi performance though, but Im more than happy with my performance. I have Mikuni VM24s on my 1980 750 4 cyl. I just had to use the carb holders from the 650.

as for what i am looking for. i little bit of performance and economy only for 1 year.

i am still building up my 77 1000 engine for this bike. i just want some thing to ride this summer, that is why i am putting in the 750 engine for now. my 650 has a broken ring. i just can't get myself to rebuild the 650 when i have a 750 that will drop right in.

so the 650 is going up for sale soon.

The VM24s will work fine then... until you get the 1015cc engine finished. I like the performance of the smaller carbs as they have better low/mid range than do the larger venturi carbs and actually feel stronger up till you get on the sweet spot where your cams kick in... then the larger carbs feel stronger. If you are not twisting the throttle often, the 24s will feel OK!

24's should work fine on your 750 engine for now. I went with 26's and they seem to match the 750 engine quite well. Jetting was a challenge, but now that they're dialed in the bike runs excellent!

As for the rings... They are only available through Kawasaki and they go for $80 a cylinder. It's almost more efficient to go to a wiseco 810 kit. Jeff Saunders contacted JE pistons for a custom set, but they wound up costing about the same as the stock ones. I ended up running the original rings since they were still sealing tightly and the motor only had 9000 miles on it.

I think the rings are quite a bit cheaper than $80 a piston, as they are only $120 for all four cylinders for a GPz750 (from Jeff). It took me six months, but I finally got a complete set of standard GPz750 rings for ~$45 (including shipping) from eBay, and a complete set of new .020 oversize GPz750 pistons for the same price.
Now I just have to wait till a complete set of .020 rings shows up on eBay :(

BTW, GPz 750 rings have a different part number than standard 750 rings, so I don't think they would work.
Here is the part number with price for one set of 80 KZ750 rings (you need four), from Ron Ayers:

Part Number: 13008-5031
Description: RING SET,PISTON STD
Source: KAWASAKI
Price: $42.44

Jeff at Z1 is cheaper :)

I had $80 per hole written down at the time, but I have been wrong before. Perhaps the 750GPZ rings would work... I guess we didn't think of that. I wouldn't think that other than the cams and a few other do-dads that the gpz engine would be that much different. It still uses the same .738L jugs, so maybe they would work after all... ?!?!?!

Hmmm, well I know the pistons are different as the GPz750 has a higher compression ratio than the KZ750, but I don't know for sure why the rings have different part numbers, or if they will interchange.

I have a set of KZ750 pistons and rings laying around here somewhere, and a set (or more) of GPz pistons and rings, so maybe I should get off my lazy butt and go measure the ID and the thickness? That's the only two things that would keep them from interchanging, as far as I know.

Btw, when I say GPz750, I am referring to the 83-85 models because I don't know much about the 81-82 GPz750's. :)
