Severely cracked boots are bad news. It can totally mess with performance and make adjustments muy dificil.

Consider getting replacements, but in the meantime, clean them up and cover them up with black silicone sealer stuff... others in the archive have spoken about doing this. I, myself, have done this on my 400 as a temp fix until I can get the boots off...

If you need to remove the carburetors more than once, it's definitely worth it to buy a new set of airbox boots.

Try Z1 Enterprises . They keep lots of stuff in stock for our old bikes, and the customer service is top-notch.

I've heard that leakage may cause performance issues, but some things are hard to diagnose. What I can say is that new boots will cure that "throbbing thumbs when carbs are removed or reinstalled" issue that's so troublesome to the bike mechanic!

I can vouch for this... mine aren't even that old or cracked at all, and I still got throbbing thumbs when I removed my carbs last weekend. I'm replacing my airbox with pods in the spring anyways... I don't want to deal with those stupid things again.

Pod filters use a hose clamp to connect them to the carbs, they are pretty light so not much else is needed for the pods. The carbs are held up by the intake boots, so make sure, if you go to pods, that your boots are in good shape and you secure the clamps good.

Exactly. I've got new intake manifold boots on the way as well for that reason. ;)
