Permatex No 1 Gasket Maker is CRAP!

Thanks. This is another source that says the buna n is ethanol safe. It lists it as ethyl alcohol on the list. I have a good feeling about using the buna n to make a gasket for that darn adapter plate

this topic reminds me of my brother and his old Harley he had a rag taped around the petcock,talk about living on the edge,but we did fix it then.

The gas that I could save from the tank is in a gasoline approved container. The tank is off the bike and everything is cleaned up. I would love to find a "quick fix" so I could ride, but I'm waiting for the gasket material to arrive. It will give me more time in the garage working on the A1 project at least. I was so upset after cleaning up the mess, I went and sat down and started hand sanding the battery box for the A1. It's amazing how rubbing something repeatedly will calm a guy down. LOL! :woohoo:

What's leaking? a rot hole a split seam? the petcock threads?

tip that tank over and clean it off were you want to fix it. Get it dry with brake clean or acetone, or lacquer thinner etc. and smear this stuff on liberally. Let it dry the full lenght.

No leaks with that crappy ethanol enriched gas? I may bike some up to have on hand just in case if ethanol doesn't eat it.

I had a bad experience with a non-captive rubber petcock gasket. They tend to squish out due to time and pressure and then niagara falls over your garage. Especially bad is a thick rubber gasket, if they are not captive in a groove.

I use a relatively thin cork-rubber gasket lightly smeared with seal-all for my petcock.

So far the Buna-N gasket looks like the way to go. It is holding strong...though I just put it on maybe an hour or two ago. Hopefully this stuff will hold up over time. It seems a little softer than most rubbers...kind of has the smell and feel of wetsuit material (neoprene?), but a little sturdier at the same time (not porous). It did squish out a bit when I put it on, but hopefully my experience will be different than yours.

Was your rubber gasket buna-n (nitrile), or a different kind of rubber? I'm pretty sure the buna-n is the only one that is safe to use with ethanol. Maybe that was the issue you had?

Here's what happened to me. This is on a different bike, I used the stock gasket which came with an aftermarket petcock. It was about 1/8" thick rubber. This was a dirt bike tank with check valve venting so in the garage it puffs up to probably 3psi or so over time. Well this was enough to push out the rubber a few weeks later and rapidly spill 3+ gallons overnight.

So I conclude that the only time to use a rubber gasket in that situation where there will be a pressure buildup is if it is captive in a groove.

The Buna N material is used on several applications I know about where the pressures would well exceed 3psi. One I am familiar with is the Diaphragms in Wilden Transfer Pumps. If you want more reliability in one of these you can get Backing Diaphragms, or other materials.

In the above application the supplied rubber gasket was too thick and it just was not a safe solution because it deformed and squished out under compression and gas tank pressure.

Might be fine on the KZ tank though. Depends on whether the gasket can stay in place or if it just squishes out the sides when the mount is tightened.

Nebraska has had ethanol (used to be called gasahol) since the '70s.

The main difference I see between the gasket I made, and the one in the photo, is that, the holes for the petcock and bolts on mine are much smaller. They are a very tight fit around the bolts and petcock itself. I installed the gasket and adapter plate before screwing in the petcock. When it was tightened down, it had made the hole for the petcock too small. When I removed it to install the petcock, I noticed the imprint of the petcock hole. With the adapter plate tightened down, it was squeezing the gasket into the opening, and constricting the petcock hole. In my opinion, this is how it should work, and so far it is working well. I'm not sure why any gas tank would be designed to allow pressure to build up inside, as that would be a serious safety risk. In any case, the kz has a vent built into the gas cap, and that shouldn't be a problem for me unless the vent gets clogged up.
