How I lift my bike

Lifting the bike off the ground, especially the front end, has proven to be quite a challenge. Usually I can get by by putting it on the center stand, and putting a couple bags of water softener salt on the back of the bike to lifet the front end. But for what I wanted to do, (change the neck bearings, polish the upper triple and the fork lowers and calipers), I needed to lift the whole bike off the ground. So I bought a used Craftsman atv jack off of Craigslist. Took my Kerker off and discovered that due to the bottom of the engine, the rails on the jack wouldn't quite work. So I made a wooden frame to make it fit. Then I realized that if I took the front wheel off, it wouldn't stay balanced on the jack. I had to hold the back wheel up with some pieces of wood, but then that precluded me from being able to move the thing where I wanted. So then, I improvised by weighing the front wheel assembly, (almost forty lbs), and approximating it by using a dumbell handle and four ten lb disks.
Works good to me.

u can actually use 2x4's running lenghth wise with the frame and not have to take the pipes off, I used to do it that way before i built my lift table

Not in my case. I'm runnin a 4-1 Kerker which crosses underneath the oil pan.

I rum a 4 into 1 as well that crosses under, its all in how u set it up
lay the 2x4's long ways with the frame, lay em down flat which means u will have to double up, lift carefully, then tie down, its easy, done it many times like I said

Johnny, I just don't see how that would work. Got pics? I laid under there for quite a while trying to find places to put the 2X4's. I could see a couple places, but not in the right places to hold it's balance.
And thanks Patton, love the lift bar/jack stand method, but my whole point was so I'd be able the wheel the thing in and out of the garage.

dont got pics, yea balancing is tricky, I used more wood and weights like u did to keep it from teetering, it was a PIA but it was better than taking the header off. thats why I built a lift table
