Common hand-held water sprayer

Never test heat of an exhaust header by touching it with your fingers, or any other part of your anatomy.

Instead, use a common household water spray bottle to spray water mist onto the pipe.

A properly combusting cylinder will cause the water mist to instantly sizzle and evaporate.

An improperly combusting cylinder may be merely warm and the water mist will bead and run down the pipe.

Or in a pinch, you may just spit on the pipe, or use another body fluid.

Re-read the first sentence. Or bone up on treatment of burns.

i use my hand to push down on the oven burners and get em more level....i do really...it's just healing now......

I use my hands as well early on while just starting up.

I have ran back to retrieve the back half of my exhaust from the highway, grabbing it with a bare hand, and getting my fingers toasted. :ohmy:
Had to ride the rest of the way to Niagra Falls (and back home) with one burnt hand (right) and open headers.

A mist bottle is a great idea.

I have a friend that uses a Laser Thermometer to measure everything from coffee to exhaust to cylinder walls to his toaster

Laser is also handy for determining wort temp before pitching yeast, instant, & no need to sanitize. (home brewer)

I just hold my hand back from it. Pretty easy to tell three hundred degrees from one hundred at an inch or so and not burn your hand lol!

Now an industrial air compressor high pressure line, watch out for those. They get damn hot without any warning!

I seem to remember my Granma telling me years ago that a hot pan looks exactly like a cold one. Of course, me being the good infantry material that I am... I have to test it every time!

I guess when I am driving down the road and a plug fouls I will use the spray bottle that I have strapped to my sissy bar. Instead of just tapping the exhaust....Russ
