ZX550A1 - Godsjester71 was created by godsjester71
Two winter projects are slated:
Engine
Front end
Various small things

If time allows:
Rear swing arm
Front braided lines (if progressive springs)

Engine:
Valve adjust
Replace gaskets and rings
Check timing chain, chain tensioner

Front end:
Rebuild forks
Progressive springs/cut out antidive (maybe to be discussed)
Taper roller bearings for the heads

Various small things:
Chain and sprockets
Carbs
Rear tire and bearings
replace broken/missing bits
Marker lights
Repair fairing

If rear tire and bearings don't fix the wobble then.

Rear Swing arm:
New upgraded bearings and bushings
Replace shock (ouch, rebuildable?)

Part I allready have:
Gasket kit
80% of fork parts
Center stand (hope it clears muffler)

So this is my first project, do you think this is too much for a winter? That is roughly the order I would do it in. I can put in a day a week I bet. Another $600 in parts and tools (my set is fair)? Shock we are looking at another $400?

I also know that "While you're in there"s can make a job overwhelming, but its good to know and invite them

Man, that back tire was worn out in the last century! Definitely time for a new one! And while you're in there, replace the valve-stem caps :P

Do you think I am biting off more than I can chew in a winter?

Engine has to be done, it's leaking too much over 4k and I worry about the back end of that leak not getting enough life blood. I've also heard valve seats are something to be looked at.

A close second is rear tire. Valve stem to be added in. This is no biggie.

I'd like a well sorted out bike for once, and this is the one. I know a better beginning subject would be easier, but this is what I've got.

I will be using this thread to sort my project out, blue is the color of things directly related to the project, red for communications, black for discussions. I will be cutting and pasting from other threads/forums to keep it all in one place.

From CoreyClough on GPz550:

"Base gasket is a must. I'd go with at least new rings....no wait... do a compression test(warm, and throttle wide open), and see how it is. I have 44000 miles on mine, and rod knock happened bfore the compression got below 135(that was the psi of all of my cylinders). 180psi is new, and 109psi is rebuild time. If it's low, then hone the cylinders, install new rings, and ride it for as long as you want. Only go the 615cc route if you're really serious about keeping the bike, and then do whatever else you can think of while you're in there, including rebuilding the head, cam chain, and a lot of these ->..."

made it into a link

Looks good, but you have to work fast and not go over previously painted areas. Let me know if you try it.

Well, I'm hoping that wont happen outside the chit chat area, if not, maybe some hopes for some rights on this thread alone. But I'm also hoping for some security thru obscurity. shhhh... ;)
