Undressing a 1300 Voyager

I introduced my Voyager-on-a-diet HERE .

While not as sexy as a lot of projects, I'm excited about it and have begun lightening the old girl up. The hardest part is yet to come when I begin tackling The Rat's Nest and gadgets under the fairing.

It's good to be elbows deep into another transformation. I've done a few, but this may just be the most challenging. Will see soon.

Anyway, the pile is definitely growing:

There's actually a motorcycle under there! At the risk of over-simplifying, I just need a seat, coupla fenders, handlebars, headlight and a bunch of wiring tidying up. Oh, and paint. Fun stuff. It will be a looker and a runner.

Found out today that an '83 CB900 Custom front fender is a perfect fit. Comes out of my stash. Saves a few bucks and looks great.

I have no direct experience with these bikes, but have been tempted when I see these beasts advertised on CL. As Bill noted in the other thread, is the EFI electrical located in the faring? Does this bike still run in it's present state (pictured), or will you need to relocate the EFI module and electronics?

The EFI module is actually located under the seat directly over the battery compartment. It’s visible in the photo above. There’s nothing in the faring except audio gear – stereo amplifier, stereo head, CB, intercom and associated interconnections.

Also yet ANOTHER stupid question. What are the 6 black doohickeys hanging out of the left side of the battery box? NICE workshop BTW.

It was nineteen years ago when I stripped down my 1100. I too suspected there was some fine things hidden beneath all that [strike]crap[/strike] nice stuff. I felt the unveiling immediately improved the handling and balance, like you know... how it was supposed to be. Uh huh.
Took awhile to acquire the correct parts (headlight bucket, trims, turn signals, etc,) needed to revert it back to stock. I kept it that way for several years before the urge to modify overpowered my senses. Just little inconspicuous things, you know. Sleeper-like stuff.

Thanks for the chatter, Gents. This is not going to be a project that I have any intention of finishing in a month or two. I'm going to take it slow and easy and have fun with it. Many times, I have rushed through one of these and made some quick or hasty decisions and ended up taking a direction that I wished I had not. Not going to happen here.

The thingamabobs on the left side of the bike beside the battery are a bank of relays.. This bike from the factory had a lot of circuits and a number of them were reasonably heavy loads and were serviced through relays. I haven't dived in deeply enough yet to know whether or not they're all necessary in its stripped down form, but I suspect not.

Well, it's time to start accumulating parts. First I detail this puppy (dirty as heck) do just a little more electrical work and then mock it up. Then paint. Cheap paint.

But, after pulling lots of stuff off and having (no joke) probably 10 to 15 connectors hanging open, it fired right up! Needed just a little work in the power distribution area - as there were a few "enhancements" made by PO's.

Did I mention that this thing runs well?

Had some time to devote to this beast lately. It was tough to find a donor tank that would fit the Voyager frame. This one was close enough with a few mods to both frame and tank - from a 750 Zephyr. I liked it enough to fight to get it to mount up. Have a couple of tail sections, but am not happy with them. Now leaning toward a short chrome fender. Getting there!
