Gonna give this a go here... KZ1R Modified/clone from a 1976 KZ1000A

Got a really poor shape KZ for the cost of a cup of coffee and should of been paid to haul it away... I went ahead against my better judgement and pulled the motor down to see inside. Well boy was I surprised, the internals are in as good a shape as anyone could hope for.

I will load up all the pics to date, but leave out much of the conversation, and start from where I am now.

To summarize:
Bike as purchased, then just tear down as usual, motor inspection, parts assessment bla bla bla... Then the hairbrain idea to do a clone Z1R with modified suspension (I had some parts around) went with the GSXR legs I had and another modified FZ6 swingarm with custom machined pivot, new devon steering stem and one off custom top tree to raise and run superbike bars. Then I went about gathering plastic, seat pan and a tank which all came together faster than I could of hoped for.

I didn't come here and I ain't leavin

A little tip for adapting a pivot axle.

On my last two i have used an FZ6 box swingarm and the pivot axle is larger, to overcome the difference without modifying the frame I had to come up with an axle that would fit. What I ended up doing on both a SOHC CB750 and this KZ1000 was to use the stock axle and both the FZ and Stock bushing/bearing race (inner tube) You will need to Cut or face off the FZ at both ends for exact length, machine the stock tube to press fit inside the FZ tube... on the Honda you need only skim a few thousandths off, but on the KZ a bit more, both have plenty of meat so no worries on the machine work.

For the Honda it pressed sorts easy, but before pressing the two i drilled two holes for plug welds to keep them from turning oposite each other. The machinist I had turn and face the KZ parts did an excellent job and pressed it all together with a thin coat of red thread lock just to add some sticktion no welds.

Here is the results:

Did a little phosphoric soak and scrub on the seat pan, need to weld up the crack and it will be good as new!

as far as fairing mounts for the z1r you might want to look over the ones that sanctuary produce.
