1985 GPZ750 project: lots of questions

I just picked up a 1985 US model GPZ750 (25K miles) that has been sitting outside for 8 years. It's going to need a lot of work. And I'm going to need a lot of advice and help in getting it up and running. I've put together some initial cursory questions I hope you all can help me with:


1. Is it worth getting rid of the airbox and going to individual filters? I've heard on other bikes it can cause flat spots and carb tuning issues.

2. Is it worth buying a bike specific jet kit? The bike currently has the stock exhaust.

3. I plan to perform a leak down test on it and take the head off to replace gaskets regardless.
Are there any tips tricks, or things I should do while I have it off?
Besides a big bore kit (which I don't have money for) what is the hot ticket to get a bit more oomph out of this engine?

Thats a better pic
Stick with airbox,
Stay with your standard carb setup - keep it simple for a start - get it sorted,
Thats motorcycle abuse letting it sit outside for 8 years - just appalling : )

First & most important is to get a KAWASAKI service/shop manual, for your specific year & model bike, don't waste your money on a Haynes or Clymer manual ....go thru the maintenance procedures in the manual, if it's been sitting outside for 8 yrs. chain & sprockets are toast, brake fluid , oil, fresh fuel , fork oil carbs cleaned, ETC.
stay with the stock airbox & pipes, tires are probably shot too
once you go thru the maintenance procedures & get her running properly, you'll be surprised on how much oompf, that bike has

If the stock GPZ fork length is 31 inches (approx) and most sportbike front ends are 28-28.5 PLUS they run a smaller rim diamater and low profile tire (another 1 inch difference from the GPZ); how are guys getting away with running an updated front end that is essentially 3-4 inches shorter than the stock one without doing a custom drop down triple clamp? And can even a gull wing top triple clamp give you 3-4 extra inches?

since you are a member on 750turbo download the base manual you will need it .do some looking on there they have done a lot of front and rear swaps.i am rebuilding my 8100cc gpz as we speak .it sat for many a year in storage.so now i am gathering all the parts for the rebuild any questions just ask been playing with these bikes for 30 years.

original owner of a 1984 gpz 750
1985 turbo 750 stock, being restored.
1984 gpz 750 with 810 cc wiesco's megacycle cams(471-10) 34 mm flatslides v&h pipe ported head dyna ignition. bottom end, crank case from turbo 750 and sprockets.
