Yup, I'm following along. Learning things too.

Thanks for the compliments guys, the learning and the tinkering is great and so is the encouragement I get here. Not sure what kinda statement it will say about me, but it has been fun nonetheless. I was afraid going into this project that some of the things I was doing might look like a cookie-cutter build, but I'm glad there is so much diversity; modernizing parts of these bikes is a great way to keep them on the road and safe, a perfect blend of form and function I think. And there is so many different ways to go about it!

So I finally got all my orders in from Z1. First for the valve ( :blush: ) and a 2.00 shim, I also picked up a neutral switch to replace my lost one. Second order to get the shims I needed and some fuel line. While I waited on that, I found an Ebay store that sells only carb parts, so I got 2 jet needles since Z1 was out. And just before the snow hit, with the help of my wonderful girl friend, we slipped the head on and torqued it down. Unfortunately, I lost all the copper washers and the local places want a dollar a pop! :pinch: Once I get the looooong overdue rebuild parts for the mini lathe, I'll turn a hand full out of some copper stock and put them on one atta time. Gotta clean up the tach driver, the tensioner and the oil bypass and I can finally button up the engine, IF it ever thaws out..... I'll be enjoying the warmth of the fireplace inside to rebuild the carbs. :laugh: Pics soon.

Thanks Leon, I felt it might not have been said enough what with some of the negative things I was reading around here, kinda made me feel like I wanted to curtail my posts some for the way I executed this project. On the other hand, I am a rather shy person and don't give as many compliments as I think I should, where they should probably be given. Like so many threads on here where people have showcased some very impressive fab skills, so I thought I might make that comment for those folks as well; they have given me a lot of inspiration.
D.Nel, I dunno how I missed YOUR build, but I'm playing catch-up!! I love the inspiration and the "thriftyness". I picked my whole suspension setup for $450, forks, triples, swinger, and shock. Wheels were another $300, your right, there are deals to be had out there! I've missed the start of several threads, but I'm glad I can see how far they have come. Awesome!!

And now for my own, I have some updates. First, I got the Andrews cams dropped in and decided to use the stock sprockets, as I didn't want to have to deal with degreeing them in to get it running and broke in. As would be expected the rubber dampeners were junk, and being as cheap as I am :blush: I couldn't see spending the money to buy some new ones or the APE alumin-ee-um ones, so I knocked up some for myself.

Next up, the carbs were still off the rack while I found the will to brave the 25* weather to rebuild the mini lathe and bang out a couple of those nifty billet fuel tee's. Luckily it warmed up enough Sunday to try my take on them.
I got to looking at the ones for sale on ebay and I just couldn't quite wrap my head around how they were made, it looks like the barb is pressed into the body. In that case I could see it get popped out when I pull the line off. Or its one solid piece. My twist is as follws:
I drilled a 7/16" hole at both ends of a length of 3/4" stock and cut them off and a couple pieces of 1/2" stock.

Turned the 3/4" pieces down small enough to fit between the carbs on the rack, which is about .600"and faced the ends.

Once the were the right size on the hole-y end, I turned the other side down small enough to serve as the barb. Then bored an 11/64" hole thru to the 7/16" hole.


The transfer piece was turned down to about .002" larger than the 7/16" hole and the ends turned to the same dimensions as the originals.

And then the o-ring grooves.

The .002" interference makes for a nice fit. Using a little leftover from the lathe, they went together in the vice with no issues.

Holy crap! Nice build! I am too lazy to build my own T's so I am buying aluminum ones when it is time to powdercoat my carbs.....

I broke out the new 5DL31 needles for the install and put the clip on the middle notch. old and new:

I had a bit of trouble when I pulled the link out of the slide because the JIS screws were so tight they just about stripped, so I found a solution in the form of stainless allen bolts (don't forget the anti seize). I figure it would be any harder to do the job later, but I don't think I'll strip them out so easy.

Aaaaand wah-lah, rack-o-carbies!!

I got pretty excited about that and then got a little premature :huh: :blush: I put the rack on and cut my vent lines to length; although I still have to go through the float level procedure, I just wanted to see what it looked like and get the tubing off my bench lol

Nice work on the carb T's- those look pretty mean! In regards to your slide screw issue- I did the same thing with mine. When I rebuilt my 650, I got a Wiseco big bore 720 kit for it, so I had to go bigger on the carbs. Put a Dynajet stage 3 kit in it, and then had to fine tune the bike. Because I was moving the needles so much until I found the sweet spot, I pretty well wrecked the screw heads. Got a pack of 12 allen bolts on ebay for a few bucks, problem solved. Sometimes it just takes a little head scratching and ingenuity to get it all done

The last shot of the bike with the seat on is amazing. She's going to be one mean bike when it's all said and done!
