Just a quick recap on this bike.

I bought it like this,

Then I went over it installed a gs1100 swingarm, Z1 side covers and painted/polished the whole works.

Well it's been about 12k miles since then and they've not been kind to my old KZ, Over the course of the year it received a different exhaust, some bar end mirrors, an ugly yet very comfortable seat, A severe base gasket leak and about 2k of the miles were on gravel.

The whole bike is this dirty

It's been everywhere this year.

And now it's time to rip it apart again and give it the full treatment, here it sits tonight halfway dismantled.

I'm going to powdercoat the frame, I have new pistons, cams as well as a Z1 crankshaft ready to be put in.

As far as machining goes, luckily I'm a machinist by trade I figured I'll backcut the trans, install larger valves, a little port and polish work and weld the the new crank.

I'm also going to paint it a little more custom, And stop taking gravel roads.

machinist by trade

....
You have just made a whole slew of new friends.....

Question on welding the crank.
Obviously accomplishing yourself, any guide/tutorial on what is actually accomplished in this procedure....

Images of exactly where to run the beads?

Can this be accomplished accurately mind you with wire feed versus TIG...?

Add i800phyco to the list guys.....

To be fair I've never welded a crank before, I dont think I'd try it with wire feed I'll be using TIG. What I'm thinking I'll do is die grind a groove where the journals go through the counter weights then fill the groove with the TIG welder I'll be doing it tomorrow I'll be sure to take some pics.

All the one I have ever seen done just have a couple ofsmall beads across from each other...The crank was engineered to stay true ...mind you not as a drag bike (hard launches slick ect.) so just a little will go a long way....also the more you put in there the more weight you add I know its not much but they are balanced to within the gram...and that aint much...just my 2 cents

I welded the crank today.
The welds look better in person.

I used your basic Miller Syncrowave AC/DC TIG.
