I bought this '78 kz650 a few months back and it is still a work in progress:

Before:

That's my kz440 in the background

During:

So far I've:

- Replaced the handlebars (still looking for a stock set though)

-Done a paint job ,although the tank is not finished, I did a POR15 liner and it bubbled so I'm still trying to remove that, also while tring to remove the liner with chemicals, the tank's paint job was ruined so I am looking for another tank in case I can't get the dang tank liner out successfuly.

-Repainted the exhaust

-Stripped the emblems of lots of black paint and repainted with black and appliance touch up white for the lettering.

-Rebuilt Petcock (didn't need it but I had a kit)

-Added strap to seat

-Replaced hand grips

-Added new master cyliner

-Other things I can' think of at the moment.

I plan on gettting the paint job finished, adding a good set of stock handlebars (if you have some, please let me know), replacing the chain guard, new chain and sprokets, replace front tire (already have replacement), add factory left hand controls, get electrical demons worked out, replace the pods with the stock airbox and rejet carbs to match.

I'll be sure to update when I get some work done to it.

Let me know what you think.

I've got a chrome chain guard off of my 78 650. It is mostly good, but I think there is a bad spot in the chrome. If you want one to try on, let me know.

Aside from my question the bike looks good. I've got a stock airbox if you need one.

I got a master cylinder like this off of ebay:

cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FRONT-BRAKE-MAST...dZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

These are always on ebay and pretty decent. I was thinking about putting the stock one back on so I might sell this one if you are interested.

I actually have an airbox but I'm missing some parts to it. Do you use pods or is it just an extra airbox?

I use pods, but am in the middle of rehabbing the bike and should wait and see if I need it. I spoke too soon.

Update:

I cleaned the tank as best I could and sprayed a quick coat of paint and installed it on the bike. I couldn't stand not riding. I have gotten some of the electrical bugs worked out but still need to get the horn and rear running light working. I've got some parts I need on the way from z1enterprises and am enjoying the "stuff" out of riding my bike again.
