my buddy who is a bike mechanic

I would think he might be a good budy to have!:woohoo:
Be SURE to buy him something good for Christmas..preferably some kind of tool he needs...to work on KZs!:woohoo:

Oh he's getting paid, well sort of. I trade him bike work for computer work so it works out well for both of us. ;)

Small update.

Just got about $200 worth of parts from fleabay and z1. New headlight
New spark plug boots
New fork seals
Carb rebuild kits
Used airbox (missing one boot and attachment brackets)
New brake pads
New throttle cables
Used chain guard

I'm going to take the day off on 1/2/07 and rebuild the carbs and start on the forks. Also I need to get the airbox in so that I can make sure I have enough clearance for the rear master cylinder.

Tom

kzwolfsr, My front rotor is drilled. I have seen ones on 78s drilled but have wondered if they were not oem.If you look on this page in the first section in the pictures none of the 78s have drilled rotors. It also says that in 79' the letters on the tank became all large like "KAWASAKI" but mine are "Kawasaki" like it shows in several pics so I dunno.

Yep I wouldnt bother to get brain fart on it. I suspect that as the year 78 was going out things were still changing over, like in the clymer manual they say the manufacturers in 1979 started putting in accelerator pumps on the carburetor to improve performance, so I am guessing I have a late 78 bike, which is pretty special

Sorta funny but not really story.

So I was rebuilding the carbs on Tuesday of this week. Everything was going good as I moved to carb #2. As I started to remove a jet a piece of it snapped off and hit me in the left eye :S It didn't really hurt so I went on and finished up rebuilding them. Later that evening my eye started to bother me so I took out my contacts and noticed that it was cut. The night was horrible (constant watering and burning feeling). So I had my wife double check to make sure nothing was in my eye, of course she found nothing. So the next day I schedule and appt with the Eye Doc. She proceeds to tell me how lucky I was and that my contact saved my eye. Apparently I cut my cornea over 60% of the way through and if I hadn't had my contacts in I would probably have lost my eye.

So how's that for a routine carb rebuild.

I ALWAYS read that you should wear safety glasses when rebuilding carbs but I always thought of it when using cleaner, not for pieces coming off! Thanks for sharing. Maybe i will be more careful after hearing this.

She's almost ready for the road.

Last week I got the new turn signals on and wired up. Got a stock airbox put in and the carbs dialed in. Replaced the fork seals and changed out the oil. Changed the engine oil/filter. Changed out the rear shocks. Fixed the starter button. Installed the new grips and throttle cables.

Really the only things left are to get side covers painted and put on, get a new front tire, and get the rear master cylinder bracket that I made welded on and finish up those brakes.

It's the other way around. '78 and BEFORE have the all caps: KAWASAKI. '79 and after have Kawasaki.
Same with drilled discs, they started in '79, although the SR (D) model started some things before the B&C models.

So the crankcase breather hose that connects to the airbox is bad and I can't seem to find anyone that has one. Does anyone have a suggestion for a workaround/replacement?

Thanks in advance
