Hey y'all - new to the site and to bikes in general. Getting my class M here in VA in a couple weeks, taking the MSF course 9/15-17.

I spotted a '78 KZ750 in running condition in MD, and bought it. Now I need to get it running *good*. It starts right up, but runs rough, and will not idle for long. I know I need to clean out the carbs and change the oil at the least. There is no obvious rust in the tank. It is dirty, a bit rusty here and there, and has a host of stripped screw heads. Good times!

Looks like I will be nosing around here for a good long while. Already I have taken away some good info from the other members, for which I am grateful.

Be talking to ya!

Jim.

Welcome Jim.

Look through the Archives as well. There's years of info there that wont show up if you do a search on the main site.

We'll need some pictures of your 750 as well, just to prove you have the goods to be in KZRider. ;)

I think I've found my favourite article. Costa Mouzouris is the editor of Cycle Canada Magazine. He recently wrote an article on resurrecting a thousand dollar beater bike. Most of the methods are pretty low-tech. The article is worth a read.

Hey Jim,
Finally another VA rider! Welcome aboard. I'm a couple hours south of you, but I also have a 750 and would be glad to help out any way I can.

Thanks guys! I have been doing a lot of reading and research on the KZ750, and reading up on a lot of posts here. That article on the cheap beater sounds like my mentality - it was cheap, it runs, and I think I can fix it up (Mind you, I am a computer guy, not an engine guy!). Funny, the article said "you could smell gas for metres away" - this one leaks from the overflow tube after you shut it down (stuck float, I think), and reeks of gas. I am kinda glad I do not have a garage to put it in!

I have purchased a few key parts from Z1 and ebay, in an effort to get it ready for inspection (horn and signal covers). I am watching for a service manual - I am going to need it!

Thanks for the encouragement - I will snap a pic or two this week and get them posted. It's really out there in my driveway! Really! ;)

OK, here is a pic I snapped just before the (NOT IN THE FORECAST) thunderstorm came on tonight.
