Stripped 83 Z1000

Hi!

I bought this one yesterday, a slightly modified 1983 Z1000.
Rode it home in the currently evil swedish wheather for 20 miles and the bike is fine,
love the upright Scrambler ride position. Smoked a bit from headers 1 and 3 arriving in my garage and I think it´s petrol (black) , pulled the plugs and apart from being the wrong length thread they´re both black and white. Think the carb is not near jetted right
for the open K&Ns and supposed to be other cams too, plus the 4-1 system. Putting 4 new
NGK B8ES in it tomorrow.

Still: great to be here and I will read your posts and probably
ask some idiot questions as well!

Quite the bike. Not only stripped, it has knobby dirt bike tires too. I bet it just lights that knobby dirt tire up instantly. :woohoo:

You are a lucky man in being able to ride it home under it's own power. Most buying a bike that old don't get that luxury, OR pay top dollar then still down't want to ride it home to keep the miles off of it.

There are some good people here, giving out some solid advice. You are at the right place for sure.

Welcome aboard! You may want to do a careful check of the framework that supports that seat. It looks rather weak to me, and if it fails while you are riding the bike - OUCH! Ed

The exhaust hanger looks like mouted on the rear brake lever rod, be careful with this mod, plus the rear break line is to short.
I want to se more pics of the swing arm, suspetion to frame Support.

Yeah well it´s in quite ok condition but sure still a 35 year old bike that´s been punished quite a bit, though
MOTd Ok in July and I payed equivalent of 2K USD for it, being that it runs ok and I like the special build it felt
like an Ok deal. I looked at some older bikes same style but decided I wanted something with a bit more oumph
in it and this one has that. Thanks for the welcome Old Kaw!!

Thank you Scirocco, it looks a bit like that in the photo but it´s in fact mounted on seperate bar. The guy before seller did the rebuild with the rear mono shocker
and all, a metal craftsman who seem to have done a good job. would not have ridden it 20 miles if not!

thanks 650ed, I get your point and it is of course weaker than original frame but the guy who built was a metal craftsman and it is
actually sturdier than you would think underneath and solid welds. (famous last words...)

Sorry if this is the wrong forum but:
Found the service manual online and being the real deal it says "remove the tank" but not how, I can´t find the mounts?!?
Don´t know if that´s modded too but I can´t see anything in the rear or front of tank that looks like it´s holding it?

Remove the seat and you will find a bolt that fastens the tank to a bracket on the frame.

My 83 KZ1100 doesn't use any bolts just rubber mounts. There is a tab under the seat on the back of the tank you pick up on and (supporting the tank) pull back and it will slide out of the front mounts.

This might be different for you, your tank has a different shape then mine. I think they all use some version of the front rubber pucks in the front though.

The tank on my 1977 KZ650 is mounted this way too. Ed
