Hey guys (and girls I presume)!

As you can see, I'm a new member today.

I'm leaning heavily towards purchasing a KZ650 and I'm hoping for a little help & a few suggestions.

The bike:

1978 KZ650 - super clean bike with 14K miles, Drag Specialties Cafe Style Seat/Fender, aftermarket bars, new tires front & rear, runs & rides excellent.

The current owner is asking $1200. I'm wondering if that is a fair price. I was thinking closer to $900, but I have very little experience with KZs.

I'm also wondering if there are any owners who mod their bikes (chop/bobber/cafe), or if this is primarily purists.

lots of chopped and modded bikes here as for 1200 it seems kind of high but i guess its worth whatever you are willing to pay. and if or when you get it WE WANT PICS:woohoo:

If this 650 needs nothing to ride for the season, I'd say it's not a bad deal. I'd try to bring the price down a bit, but if the seller is firm, you may have to walk if it's too much for you. If the bikes been for sale for a while, the seller may take a cash offer.

There are many modded bikes on site here, as well as stockers. Take a look through the Gallery to see for yourself.

with the cost of petro going up what seems like every day, motorcycle are going to be important. and if it runs, it will sell. so right now that might be alittle over priced, but i would bet it wont lose much value to someone who wants to save.

Welcome, I hope you enjoy your stay here at KZR.
As far as $1200, I think if the bike is in "near perfect condition" it would be worth while. KZ650's are great bikes and parts are easy to come by. It all comes down to what you are willing to pay. If you have checked out the bike from top to bottom and are sure that you are getting a good reliable bike, then go for it. I would pay $1200 for a KZ650 in really great shape with a few mods and running well. The price does seem a little steep, but it all depends on where you are located and the quality of the bike involved.
Try to talk him down a bit. $900 would be a great deal, but they may not go that low. Since you said that it ran, drove, and looked great, you don't have too much negotiation room. Offer $900 cash and see where it goes from there.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm really leaning towards picking up this bike the more I hear about it. Funny things is, I ran into an old friend who has a 1973 Honda CB350 twin that is absolutely mint and pretty much untouched (the bike has 2,548 original miles and has been stored indoors since 1975) - asking price: $1200 - go figure! I'm not into CBs, but it sounds like maybe a good investment for resale.

But... I want that f'in KZ baby!

If it helps you at all, I picked up a non-running 77 kz650b1 in November (carbs and electrical system were a nightmare but and the paint was trash but the rest of the bike was real clean) for $500 and now with about another $450 or so sunk into parts and a whole lot of hours over the winter I have a daily rider that starts and runs better than any of the other newer bikes I've owned (94 fzr600r and 93 gsxr1100). So, if the bike is in great shape and you won't have to sink any money into it this season I say go for it!

I got a 77 650c1 for $550 but am already over $1200 and it still doesn't run yet. (well, it did run when I got it, but I decided to overhaul anyways) Although I've learned a lot and am having fun doing the work myself, a good running bike for $1200 doesn't sound half bad to me right now, I'm itchin to ride again. I'd still haggle down, it doesn't hurt to try.
