New Owner KZ750-4 Spectre project was created by asphaltaddict33
Hello all. I purchased a non-running 1983 KZ750-(N?) Spectre shaft drive recently as a winter project. I got it from a gentleman with a barn full of projects and a new outlook that he would rather ride than wrench for now. The bike is complete with full fairing and touring luggage. He purchased the bike as a non-running project as well, and determined it needed top-end work and purchased a whole spare head and valve assembly which was included with the purchase. As well a full top end gasket set and various seals for suspension were included.

Many things look to be in good shape like the wheels and seat, seems well cared for I was surprised to find OEM info stickers looking near perfect under the seat. The suspension needs work on both ends, as well as a final drive and brake overhaul im sure. A Colorado title was included so for 550 bones I feel good about the purchase.

Looking forward to getting a service manual in the mail and getting this thing started toward getting back on the road. I plan to start a separate build thread in the appropriate spot to post photos and questions for the project. From a little poking around this forums looks like a great resource for these bikes.

He probably ought to get the 750 shaft manual. There are usually several listed on eebbaayy & often times at reasonable prices.

eb search = KZ750 shaft manual.

ps: the purchase price sounds pretty darn good to me. :)

Have the frame down tubes been cut and welded just above the header pipes?

I found a shafty manual on eBay which just arrived so ive some fun reading for this weekend.

TexasKZ I need to pull the headers and examine the forward frame area more closely I noticed those welds look like more than re-attaching those frame tabs on each side. Is cutting the frame down an old mod that used to be done or indicative of damage repair?

Not normal. The question is how well was this repair done? For example, did the welder insert and weld in a solid length of snug fitting rod to strengthen the break area before welding this, or did he just weld the frame tube hoping it would stay together until he sold the bike. Ed

Like 650Ed said, that is not normal. I would remove the fuel tank and seat to see if there are any other signs of crash damage or frame splicing before I went any farther. It may be ok, but it would be best to know for sure before sinking any more money into it.
