Hey all, I just picked up this lovely 650! My first kawasaki and probably already my favorite bike. She needs some tlc. Carb holders, throttle cables, but she's a runner! As the topic states, I can't find a make on the exhaust, and I'd like to find out a make, because there is no bracket holding the muffler to the bike. I would just make one up, but I don't have the tools or the time. Can anyone help me out?

Hello, Algoe, and WELCOME to KZr!

Is the whole exhaust system (headers and muffler) attached only by -- and dangling from -- the clamps at the engine exhaust ports?

Is there any screw or screw hole or tab on the muffler not shown in the pic -- to which a fabricated simple hanger bracket could be attached?

Does it appear necessary that a hanger for the muffler will require a band around the muffler?

Good Fortune! :)

For sure it needs a bracket or hanger back at or near the muffler. Otherwise the weight of that muffler coupled with the leverage applied because of the length of the pipe may end up damaging the cylinder head where the pipes attach. I would not ride it until that issue is resolved since hitting a bump may trigger the damage. Ed

The exhaust is only attached by the ports, it seems to have a tight fit. There was a piece of metal attached to the passenger footpeg I'm assuming is an old bracket that broke off. I defiantly want to put a bracket In it's place. But don't have to means to make one right now. And I think the factory one ment for this would look much better than my shitty metal fab.

The back looks like a slide lock.

piece of metal attached to the passenger footpeg --- how was it attached to the muffler?

These have served well without looking too awfully shabby. And the miniature rubber mounts isolate vibration from the frame.

Some Mac exhaust systems have a "slide-lock-looking" bracket on the backside of the muffler.

Would heed Ed's advice.

Tight exhaust clamps don't lessen the risk.

Don't be surprised when hitting a bump results in the exhaust studs being torn from the engine head and likely taking chunks of the engine head along with them.

And if that's not already bad enough, running the engine with open exhaust ports, or what's left of them, can quickly result in valve damage.

A muffler hanger made out of bailing wire would be better than nothing. Or whatever type wire might be otherwise preferred.

Good Fortune! :)

On a side note: was that bike on eeeBBBaaayyy last week? Could've sworn I saw one just like it, either there or on CraigsList.

Nice lookin' ride!

Thanks for all the options and ideas. I ended up cutting an old mc tag long ways about 3/4 inch wide, and used the preexisting holes. One went to the passenger peg and the other to the muffler. Just a temp fix for now.

Not an eBay find. Actually a Facebook for sale page. Got a really good deal on it to boot, because it was on there for four months and that was the only place they posted it. If he put in on Craigslist it wouldn't have lasted two days.

That's even better than a wire hanger.

But for those without an old license tag available:

Bought a "mending plate" at home depot the other night, made one hole bigger cut an inch of the other side, painted it black and bam it's good to go.

But I noticed that the exhaust hits the bolt on the shock. Should this worry me?

Thanks in advance
Josh
