i can't believe what i just did. oh, and hello.

Hello All!

well, i did it. i bought a bike. i'm a 40 year old fat guy, who has wanted a bike since i was a kid. i got tired of waiting to be able to afford a harley, and decided that if i was ever going to ride, i was going to have to quit being so narrow minded and just get a bike. so i just won a '79 kz1000st on ebay for just under $900. hope i didn't pay too much. too late now! lol god. i can't believe i just did that! this is crazy! lol

oh, well. you only live once right?

i know that maybe this wasn't such a good choice for a first time rider. i seriously thought about a buell blast or some other small bike. but, i weigh just a smidge under 350lbs, and i'm 6 ft tall; i wanted something with enough power to pull me around. so, the kz1000st it is.

well, i'll write more after i quit being so geeked up about this! lol i'm sure i'll irratate the hell out of you all with a bunch of stupid questions. i'll browse the archives to see if i can keep that to some kind of a minimum. i'll see if i can post some pics after i pick it up. any advice for an FNG would be appreciated. keep the rubber side down. :blink:

If you have "never ever" ridden before, now might be the time to exercise a lttle restraint
Grab a few lessons and take it carefully, it's all to easy to crank it up just to see what happens..................believe me, something will happen :ohmy:

Welcome to KZR, with your size I think the 1000 will be OK for you. A motorcycle training coarse would be a GREAT idea. Don't worry about the dumb questions, we all started out knowing nothings

Welcome to the site. I'm also a 40 Y/O fat guy and the 1000 is the perfect size. I have had a few shafties and liked them. I wish I had another for the long commutes this summer. Anyway, send some pics and take it slow. the bike will have more power than you think, so make sure you have a lot of room when you decide to twist the throttle really hard!

Seriously, take the MSF class, ask some questions over at Beginner & Beyond , &, yes, I'll say it, think long & hard about getting rid of your new bike! That's a lot of power for a newbie!

Me, I started riding 18 months ago at the age of 34. My first ride was a KZ440. Me & my girlfriend together weigh about 300 pounds total, & the little KZ hauled us both around town pretty well.

You might want to check around here & see if anyone wants to trade up from their 550 or 650...

Anyway, welcome to the site, whatever you decide to do. Just remember that this is your first bike, not your last, ride safe, & have fun!

Yeah, who says a fat guy cant own a bike, im 6'2 and weigh in at around 290-310 depending on what scale I step on, lol. If any of those lil guys have anything to say about use fat guys john, we'll just have to get togeather and kick some but, lmao, oh and welcome on board

You're getting very good advice from everyone... take a safety/traing course.
Those KZ1000s are powerful bikes, so go easy for a while. Empty back roads with no traffic would be a great place to start.

Advice I give to new riders is, remain calm and ALWAYS remember you are in control. Too often new riders panic and freeze and run right into the object they are staring at, rather than taking the steps to avoid an accident.

Start off in a parking lot and get good basic skills. going, stopping, turning etc... Any schmuck can hop on a bike and twist the throttle to the stop to see how fast it'll go, but having the knowledge of what to do if trouble arises will keep you from becoming another statistic.

Leave your ego at home, ride your own ride and don't ride over your head or try and keep up if you're exceeding your comfort level.
