In tearing down the engines that I got with my bulk parts purchase recently, I noticed that one was an 83. I was in the process of completely disassembling the engine. When right before I was going to split the halves, I decided to check the engine number again. I had already identified it as an 83 but upon further inspection I noticed it was the 83 ELR R-2. I loosely buttoned it all back up seeing what low production numbers they were. What I'm wondering is, should I sell, or trade for more parts I need or cannibalize  everything that I can use for my other builds? The problem is that there's not much I can use out of that engine. I believe it has a good crank and was wondering if that crank will work in the earlier models. I'm concentrating on a 73 Z1 and possibly 76  kz1000. I doubt I'll do an ELR build. The reason is in that cache of parts, I got  two powder coated frames and one was a 73 and the other was a 76.Thoughts or options:)

I am interested in learning where you found info that indicates the engine number KZT00JE056542 was used on the the 1983 KZ1000 R2. I am not saying it is not but I have not been able to find any info to indicate such.

I'll post a picture of what I found this afternoon...
On a side note, I keep getting a 404 error trying to get to the files section. I'm looking for a link to service manual for 73 to 75 Z1

Thanks

Again... not sayin' that yours isn't an R engine... but my KZ1000R2 had a black set of cases and clutch cover.

It looks like the R2 and J3 share the same engine number range - as it's not black it is likely a J3

Yep, I'll definitely double check my info. If I remember correctly it was chromed and not a black engine. But that was last week when I tore that engine down and I've torn two down since then....that will make my decision of what to do with it much easier If it's not an R-2

Do you know if that crank assembly is compatible with the earlier Z's and kz's cases?

As I understand it (there are many on here that know more than me) the "J" crank is an upgrade for the earlier engine as the bearing pins are bigger, however the crank end is different to the early motor so a different starter-clutch/generator set up is required, Also different cam sprockets would be required as the "J" runs a "Hyvo" chain

Yes, earlier is morse cam chain, J1 onwards is hyvo cam chain so the crank is not a direct swop.

Z1000J2 somewhat modified!

Thank you so much guys, my decoding error. I also figured the cam chain was going to be an issue as well. I'll probably just use it for trading parts. This is what I used to decode. I see now that this data was incomplete. It stopped in 1980.

Thanks for posting the listing you were using.  I do not think I had seen it like that before. I tend to learn something new each time I visit here!
