I went with the SpeedMotoCo H4 light and bucket: www.speedmotoco.com/product-p/smc-64313.htm ($55.95)

It's a little narrower than stock but I made up the difference using longer bolts and short stacks of alternating neoprene and stainless washers from Home Depot. What little you can see of the spacers looks fine and they may reduce vibration a little bit.

The light itself looks good and and it is worlds ahead of the OEM as far as output.

Yes, it was. On my KZ400 the headlight wires are like so:

- black/yellow = ground
- red/yellow = low beam
- red/black = high beam

The SMC light arrived pre-assembled and had three wires with stripped ends coming out of the housing: green, blue, and white. Green was ground (as is traditional) but I don't recall offhand which color was high and which was low.

However, the H4 pinout (as seen from the back of the socket) looks like this:

(common = ground)

Get some bullet connectors of the correct type, connect the three wires, and you're in business. :-)

I apologize in advance if this topic has already been hashed out in this forum. I've searched high and low for the answer to this question, but have not found a good solution, yet.

Please help!

The H6024 is a halogen sealed unit drop in replacement. $20, same wattage, about 3X as bright.

Were you able to get the chrome trim piece over the drop in? How did you secure sealed beam?

Mounts exactly like stock 7" round unit. Fits exactly the same.

Question: Why do most LED setup's require a conversion unit of some sort? So, I'm looking to upgrade the halogen bulb that came with my Emgo headlight. It's an H-4 configuration. I'm led to believe that if I go with LED H-4 it will require a conversion. Is this due to wattage and voltage issues?

Thanks

I bought an LED light from ebay, the Halo uses 6W and is really good during the day. I also run low or high beam with the Halo. The high beam is 25W and is incredible. Not cheap mine cost A$100 delivered complete with shell, although the shell is poly-carbonate which might be a little fragile (I suspect). Do I like it, YES its the best I had and I was skepticle at the beginning.
I have to admit I've not seen one like this since but they advertise lights for JEEP 7". The only concern is whether there is room for wires in the shell or whether the beam itself fits into your shell, It should fit being 7"

First Permanent ride the Z1R since Dec1977 (220,000km) as of June 2015
Second permanent bike 1989 FJ1200 dyno'd 140RWH, great bike.
Third ride is now the Frankenstein 1981 GPZ1100B1, getting new/ refurbished 83-84 motor soon
Forth my work bike FJ1200 1989 (same type as above)

I also use the Truck-light LED 7' round headlight. It was $150 shipped from ebay.
Here is a good video to watch before you buy a LED headlight.
