setting up float levels - wet

what other fluid apart from petrol can i use as wet setup for carb floats?
I'm sure i read somewhere on another thread about a guy who used something else as gas stinks the house out (garage adjoined to house)

Water! But after you are done with the adjustments make sure to remove every drop of water. Drain the bowls and 8se compressed air (not a lot of pressure) via the fuel inlet line to make sure it is all out of the lines. The water can really make it run crappy.

The level at which a float floats will vary depending upon the specific gravity (density) of the liquid in which it is floating. Think of going for a swim in fresh water versus in the Great Salt Lake; you couldn't sink if you tried in the Great Salt Lake. So, if using something other than gasoline to do the clear tube test it is best to use a liquid that has a specific gravity that is at least fairy close to that of gasoline. As Martin points out, the density of alcohol is pretty close to that of gasoline; so is olive oil. Below is a link to a table that shows the specific gravity of several different liquids. This may help you decide what to use for your clear tube test.
