K&N 'Dual Filters' - Anyone tried these?
04 Jun 2012 23:11 - 04 Jun 2012 23:27
Greetings-
I am in the middle of a complete carb overhaul on my VM26 / 76' KZ900. Contrary to common sense, I am debating putting some sort of pod filters on and playing with jetting. Have had a 4 into 1 exhaust since I bought the bike and have Dyna-S ignition.
I came across someone who put 2x k&n 'dual filters' (I dont know what else to call them) on a kz650 on the 650 forum. It required machining some adapters from the carb intakes to the air filter flanges - Im assuming on VM24 carburetors. This seems like somewhat of a compromise between form and function, as it is not 4 individual pods, but 2 larger pods.
It is k&n #RC-2222.
Im having trouble posting a picture so here is the link:
www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?prod=rc-2222
It appears as though the flanges are 43mm, whereas the flange on a pod is 42mm...pretty close. I wonder how the spacing between the two lines up.
Has anyone been down this avenue before, or can anyone offer another dual air filter alternative? I really like this idea vs. 4 pods. Anyone tried it?
I've searched pretty well and have found nothing.

i would think the question to ask is, which setup provides the most surface area per carb. the most surface area would be the best choice. is it worth the trouble to modify the filter though??
K&N has those doubles for dif modle bikes, but i havent seen them on a kz before. if they make 1 buy them. otherwise K&N has made the individual filters the proper size anyways.

I love mine they were for a cb 650 gona have to rejet but on my bs 34s the breathe a lot better than my emigo pods did and its washable. Have noticed a bad cross wind lean out but hopen rc car filter oil is thicker and will choke them down a bit so the wind don't blow threw as bad

That is just what I am going for, ready2ryde. I wonder how the fitment for those BS-34's compares to the fitment for the VM26's. Looks like you have a good fit there.
I like this idea because I think it will help some of the "carbs 2&3 run differently because their individual pods are not as exposed as 1&4 pods" problem...theoretically.
So far I have found one other picture of these filters installed on a kz650, and a Swedish website which advertises these as fitting GS750s, Z1, Z900, Z1000s. There are some different models with different flange sizes, etc. but I believe the rc2222 is the way to go.
I think maybe I'll go for it.
haha holy crap, part of the word for the Captcha thing to post is 'high-priced'...wow it must know I'm talking about a k&N

Good idea, I'll give them a buzz. Yes, theoretically I would imagine it would make 1&2 and 3&4 a little easier to tune together. I'm no stranger to syncing, but having the 2 air filter sources would probably make the pilot circuit easier to dial in vs. 4 sources.

I called and they sell the doubles based on custom measurements only....no stock part number to get as of now. U would have to call in carb spacing, height and width to see if they could cross reference something.
