Z1 Airbox on KZ900
15 Mar 2012 02:55
Gday
I am new here (long time looker) and new to KZ's so don't shoot me for any daft or repeated questions. I have a couple of bikes which i have restored RZ350 being the last one and have always wanted a z900 so I eventually bought a KZ900 about 2 months ago a US import (im aussie). The bike is in fair conditon has 26000 miles on the clock starts easy but back fire when cold around 3k. I attenting to slowly tidying this up to ride. It has pods on it they look nothing special, and from experience or my lack of would prefer the airbox. Now i soon learnt that i would have to remortgage the house to afford a crapy condition airbox overhere. I was reading this forum last night and came across an old post by weird george who indicated he used a 74 airbox on his 76KZ with K&N filters and was a good setup.
So is this true? I have been told it cant be or shouldnt be done. If it has been done is it good???
thanks in advance.

Yes you can use a Z airbox on a kz. I have been to George's house and have rode the bike. It hust makes sence to use a airbox From a Z1.

Run what you can find until you find the right one assuming you want it original. If you dont care then just leave it. A Z1 airbox is worth what 3 or 4 of any other are worth and is smaller in size so probably doesnt flow as much air

Wired George's bike was one of the best running bikes I have rode.
I think George had to support the back of the Z air box.
Dale is highly regarded in my book. He probably has enough spares to start a wrecking yard for Kawasakis. Roy

I'd recommend finding a KZ airbox. You'll have to modify your KZ side covers to to work with the Z1 airbox. Post a new thread in the Parts Wanted section on here, I'm sure someone will set you up.

Also, I have a K&N filter inside of my KZ airbox. No complaints at all, I highly recommend this set up over pods for all but race use.

Yeah! Sled, as mentioned by MTBspeed', I think you have to mod the side covers to fit the Z1 air box in.... Not sure of this, but worth while checking out.
If you do decide to go for the KZ900 air box, watch out the Z1000 looks the same, however, there are subtle differences.
