Graeme you may be able to drill and pin it or we could drill and tap the carby body and make a new post to hold the float pin and screw it into the tapped hole in the body give me a call

Alternative to welding, and as a possible supplement to drilling and pinning, might consider JBWeld.
Could use JBWeld and a tubular brass sleeve (for added support) over the round portion of the post (upper and lower) with the sleeve relieved to fit down over the stump.
Alternatively, could JBWeld the broken piece onto the stump, and add a vertical brass "slat" on opposing sides of the post along the rounded portions to help hold the broken piece onto the stump.
When applied correctly, JBWeld will survive a long time submerged in gasoline.
Good Fortune!

to my knowledge there is only 1 way to apply jbweld, kneed and stick. i have found that it deteriorates in a float bowl.
do u have a special method of aplication?

Some very reliable folks have reported good results from using JBWeld to repair broken float tower posts as well as cracked or broken over-flow tubes, and as I recall, also pin holes or cracks in a fuel tank.
For example, see the following:
Click > kzrider.com/forum/3-carburetor/179315-oooh-nooooo#179320
An uncertain, but vaguely recalling from other readings that attempted JBWeld repair failures may result from improper application or insufficient set-up time allowed before placing into service.
Perhaps ethanol might be a factor?
