Data Logging for tuning your KZ
17 Dec 2010 08:22
As some of you may know, I have recently purchased a wideband o2 sensor data logging setup. Here's the unit that I purchased:
www.innovatemotorsports.com/products/lm2.php
Now I mainly bought this to tune my other, fuel injected bike, and later a fully custom 1967 mustang with EFI that I will be building. Since I'm entrenched in building my KZ, I thought "Why not use it to tune the old girl?"
The nice thing about the Innovate unit is that it will keep a running log of air to fuel ratio, as well as 4 other analog sensors of your choice. All of this data gets stored on a SD memory card which can be plugged into your computer and analyzed numerous ways. It will even play back your run in real time.
So here's my plan: AFR is nice, but captured alone, it doesn't give you any frame of reference. I plan to log AFR, RPM, throttle position, and manifold absolute pressure. I already welded a bung into the exhaust to allow for that sensor, and preformed a basic test. The rpm can be sampled directly from my Dyna 2000 ignition.
Now for the two tricky ones. I already have a throttle position sensor purchased off ebay for $5. I have tested it and it works. Now I just have to figure out how to attach it to the throttle linkage. More on that later.
So here's my first question. I am waiting for my MAP sensor to come in (also purchased off ebay for $5.99.) I will need to draw vacuum from the ports on the carb boots. My belief is that I should manifold the four ports together to get a smoother vacuum signal. If I sample one cylinder, then the vacuum will be pulsing unless I place some type of restriction in the line. Does anyone see a problem with tying the four vacuum lines together for this purpose? Am I missing something?

i just picked up the same unit my main use will be for my zx-12r but i'm also going to use it on a couple of my drag bikes i also have a lm-1 unit that i'm just waiting on some cabling. i have been really busy with students so i haven't had a chance to use it yet but i will get more time in the spring. we will have to compare notes as far as your as your vacuam question tying them together should work just fine how are you doing it on your car or any car engine for that matter it would be the same for the bike.

Oh ZX-12r, me likee! If I didn't have a ZX-10r, I'd want a 12. That's my goal, learn the thing on the KZ, and transfer the knowledge to tuning the PCIII on my ninja. I look forward to your findings. I know that OMR was working on a homebrew version himself. I'm hoping to draw him in as well.

Subscribed.
You could use a HF Vacuum Gauge to see if the signal is smooth when all four are together. Not sure, you might need to dampen it anyways. Not my speciality, but then nothing about these bikes is...

I'm thinking you could try it both ways; a combined manifold vacuum signal as well as an individual port and compare the two. If I had a running multi cylinder bike I'd try mine...but I'm not there yet

Did you figure out how to supply 5v to your sensors? I know my LM3 has a 5v output specifically to provide the correct power supply to sensors, so I thought perhaps the LM2 would have that feature built in too since it kinda rolls the LM1 and LM3 into one unit. Kinda.

I'm sure you already have a way to drive your 5v sensors but if you don't:
Use an LM7805 voltage regulator from Radio Shack for that.

I was thinking of using a scavenged cell phone car charger. That mini USB plug outputs 5VDC to the outer two contacts. If that doesn't work, then I'll use that voltage regulator. I also thought of using a battery pack with 4 rechargeable NiCads. That would be 4.8V. Close enough for government work.

If you need to dampen the pulsations (even with all four tied together) a small fuel filter inline works well.

Makes some pretty good wideband O2 units that are quite reasonable.
AutoZone/etc sell a Bosch wideband O2 sensor for around $50 if you need a replacement. 2002 Turbo Beetle O2 sensor.
