Title says most of it.

I put new oil in my '78 kz650 and then later noticed a slight drip from the crankcase cover/breather. I tightened the crankcase cove and everything was cool. Topped off the oil. I didn't THINK I put too much but the level shows pretty full. I was thinking about taking some out but everything seemed to be running great.

Then today about 10 minutes into riding it i look down at a stop light and see my left foot is covered in oil. I turned around and parked the bike back at home.

My plan is to take some oil out. That outta do it right?

thanks!

what is your oil level now? does it use oil? is it/was it smoking?

where you leaking from? crank breather goes back into airbox or into a catch tank...excessive crankcase pressure is from blowby gases of bad rings usually.

No.

You need to stop guessing about how much oil is in the engine, and check the oil level. Putting the correct amount of oil in a KZ650 is incredibly simple.

1. Put the bike on the centerstand on level ground.

2. With the engine turned OFF look at the site glass near the bottom of the right side of engine and ensure the oil level is between the upper an lower marks at the site glass.

If the oil level is between the 2 marks at the site glass and the engine is blowing oil out of the breather there is a problem with the engine. Ed

martin_csr: Yes, I did an oil change with a new filter. I added it until the level was full but i didn't measure.

650ed: The oil is not between the two. It is above the top one. With the bike on the center stand on level ground I'll take some oil out UNTIL it is between the two dots. How's that?

Tyrell: The oil was coming from the crankcase breather cover and filter.

The bike needs to be on the center stand when measure oil level. Also realize, the oil will expand when hot so measuring cold after parking for a while will make it easy to judge.

Next time you change the oil "and" filter it takes 3.7 quarts or just a hair under then run and let it sit for a good hour or so or over night and check like said on the center stand.
