Looking at a different wiring diagram this red/white wire is definitely the output lead which is not present on the new unit.

If I swap the positive output over the the correct pin in the 6P connector, is it sufficient to run the auxillary (headlight brakelight, horn etc) off the battery as long as I know its getting adequate charge?

Looks like that is what I need to do, the newer style reg/rec does not require the brown wire output and can keep track of the system load.

Swapped the red wire to the middle pin and waiting till tomorrow to test. 11:30PM here...

Will post up if I don't have 13 too many beers with coworkers :woohoo:

PATTON: btw plugs are NGK BR8EA, don't think they are resistive but I'm not 100%

The R means resistor.

My money is on the carbs causing your initial poor engine performance - next time they are out, take them to a shop that has an ultra sonic cleaner, then carefully assemble and bench set the float heights and synch before installing the carbs back on the bike....
