Just bought a 76 kz 900 ltd. I payed 1k for it. The guy i bought it from went through it and got it running after finding it sitting for some years. Don't really know a whole lot about older bikes. I am mechanically inclined when it comes to working on my older cars but not to much with this bike. It runs ok but won't seem to idle without me having to keep on the gas a little. It's also smoking a little mostly at start up and idle and seems to be leaking a little oil at the head gasket area. I've always wanted and old kz bc my dad had a KZ 550 for years and I loved it. Is this a good bike. Any ideas where to go from here. I new To The Forum also

Very good bike and that model is pretty collectable. Any pics? If its anywhere near stock, keep it that way.

welcome.
if you can work on anything you can work on this bike no sweat.
they are pretty basic.
sounds like you may have some leaking valve seals.
so that would be a good time to remove the head and inspect everything.
if all is well ,a head gasket and some valve seals your back in business.

Welcome...
Well, readjust with the idle screw to bring your idle up.
Also, find yourself a Service Manual. As a mech, you should know the value of paper with spec info.
Good luck...
