Correct me if I'm wrong but I've never heard of
the VM29 s/b's having a pump.

I have the VM29's on my ZX750A1 motor and jetting
the mid range on up was easy the idle, off idle has been a PITA.
I'm 17.5 pilot's needle clip in the thrid notch now and it's still rich thinking 15's plus playing with the
needle's and needle jet's some more will help.

If not already done, would assure the BS30-97 air jet is perfect.

RS34 carbs are a bit small for my setup.

I had to fatten them up some going 4 sizes richer on the needle jet, bump the main jet and go to a 20 pilot.

AFR is right with this setup.

My bikes setup would be a great fit for the RS36, probably good out of the box....... BUT being a street bike, the RS34 carbs are more street-able and will have more off idle throttle response and mid-range drivability than the RS36 but the RS34 give up top end power over the RS36.

Off idle is usually the most difficult part of the curve to dial in because there are multiple circuits that affect the transition.

Fuel level is critical to have set right. Then do a good synch. Set those things first. Then ride the bike in 1st gear. Try to hold a steady 1500 RPM, see how it behaves. Go up to 1500, then 2000. Be very diligent with the throttle in trying to hold those RPMs steady. Take a screw driver with you and adjust the pilot air screws in 1/4 turn increments to smooth out the engine as you do the testing.

I've run into 29's that suck air past the slides when the carb tops are removed to snych them. You'll notice it immediately when you take the tops off if yours do it. On modified 900/1000 engines I prefer the Suzuki rack with the 2.0 slides.....

Then you have the situation that the gasoline isn't the same as what it was 20 years ago and that plays into the mix. If you are lucky enough to have gas with no alcohol widely available, run it. It's very sparse in my area.
